personal care and cosmetic processing

Personal Care Products are a homogeneous solution of surfactants, conditioning agents, and many other ingredients in and aqueous solution. The following are the ingredients involved in processing are:

  1. Water: About 50-60%- De-ionized water is used
  2. Surfactants: About 20-30%- There are a wide range of surfactants available in the market based on the properties a suitable one either having much higher concentration about 70% can be used while some with even 30% are used like SLES.
  3. Conditioners: About 5-12%- Wide range of conditioners having various applications are used such as waxes, protein, silicone, etc.
  4. Viscosity Modeifiers: About 1-3%- Wide range of thickeners like PEF, gums, etc are used.
  5. pH Adjusters, Colorants, Fragrance: The pH of the product is maintained between 5-6 by addition of mainly citric acid. Further to this, additional colours and fragrances are added to maintain the required specs.

PROBLEMS WITH CONVECTIONAL MIXING PROCEDURE:-

  1. Dilution of surfactants requires much high force, mainly in case of SLES.
  2. To achieve a stable emulsion/suspension, silicones must be reduced to finest droplet size which is done through high shear mixers. Otherwise, leads to aeration in the product.
  3. Aeration was a major issue in the agitation, affecting the stability, quality of the product.
  4. In case of liquids with different viscosities, globules are formed leading to improper mixing.
  5. The high viscosity agitation leads to improper mixing and thus, dissolution of thickening agents is difficult.

HIGH SHEAR HOMOGENIZERS:

Hindu Emgineers range of high shear mixers are a perfect solution for processing of personal care products. The selection of the homogenizer depends on the desired stability of the solution as well as the throughput required.

Wahal homogenizers work on the principal of shear force being produced being a set of rotor and stator due material being flown in between the least tolerance thus causing the material to be sheared. The material is being sucked in from the rotor and thrown outwards to the stator walls due to the high centrifugal force produced due to the rotor and the material is sheared in between the rotor and stator to provide the end results.

1. Intank Batch Type Homogenizer:

  • Suitable for smaller batches up to a maximum of 800 Liters
  • Portable model to enable usage in a multiple vessels
  • Wide range of stator designs to make it versatile for a wide range of applications

2. Inline High Shear Homogenizer:

  • Works best even for higher batch sized up to 10 kL
  • Wide range of models to choose from: Single Stage, Two Stage & Four Stage Model
  • Most efficient method for dispersion and results in most superior quality

ADVANTAGES OF HIGH SHEAR HOMOGENIZERS:

  • Aeration free product as the process is under an enclosed system.
  • Better consistency with much lesser processing times thus better process efficiency.
  • Agglomerate free products thus resulting in the consistency of the solution
  • Rapid mixing times even for liquids with different viscosities thus no chances of degradation while processing.
  • Better yield of thickening agents, thus much shelf life and reduces raw material cost
